LUDHIANA: In a project that is all set to revolutionize the transport system in the state, some private transporters have installed global positioning system (GPS) in their buses. Notably, the device would provide better safety to passengers by ensuring heightened monitoring of these vehicles by the owners.
General manager of Jujhar Bus Service, Gimmy, said, “Most of the passengers file complaints about rash driving or overspeeding by drivers and conductors not issuing tickets against the amount charged.

To solve these issues, we have started installing GPS-based cameras to keep a tab on the speed of moving vehicles.”
The device would also hopefully prove efficient to nab the accused in case of terror attacks and other misdeeds. Citing an example, he added, “Recently, we had received complaints that boys had misbehaved with girls in a bus but we could not take action due to non-availability of proof.”
“We are also introducing electronic ticketing machines that would immediately convey the message to us when commuters pay fare to the conductor and are issued tickets,” he added. Speaking on same lines, the spokesperson of Syndicate Buses said, “It is indeed a much required initiative but expensive. We are looking at alternatives.”
Lauding the “traveller-oriented project”, Shivani Bharti, a commuter said, “It is indeed a good prospect. Now, drivers and conductors would have to think twice before over-speeding or misbehaving with passengers.” Another commuter, Manpreet Singh, said, “When all aspects of our lives are becoming technology-based, why not travelling on public transport. Even the same services are available in cabs, which are popular here.” Notably, there would not be any revision of fare and commuters would have to shell out the same amount.
